Christmas Makes and Bakes

James with Father Christmas

We’re well into December now and there’s just two or three weeks of school or day services left to enjoy some Christmas crafts and cookery. If you’re looking for some fun Christmas makes and bakes here’s a round-up from our site – everything is tried and tested and comes with a free-to-download Widgit symbol and photo instruction sheet!

Christmas Cards

Three great ideas for Christmas card designs in one post.

These Christmas cards need just a few items to make: some card, ribbon, sequin stars or other glittery pieces, glue and, ideally, a computer. However, instead of using typed text made on a computer you could use some Christmas wrapping paper instead.

The original post includes a set of Widgit symbol and photo instructions for each design which are free to download.

Twig Crafts

Regular readers will know I love a twig project! I have had great fun over the years collecting twigs with students, sawing them, sticking them on, or together, with a glue gun 🙂 These three projects are all tried and tested with my classes of young adults with learning disabilities and they are always a hit.

Christmas crafts reindeer Tree decoration

Twig Reindeer

Like all of our craft projects this one requires very few resources. The main ones are dry twigs and a glue gun. You also need goggly eyes (though you could use buttons or felt circles), buttons for the nose (or sequins or felt circles) and some ribbon for hanging. These reindeer are simple to make and make great little gifts. They are good for some sneaky maths practise too – counting numbers of items needed and measuring twigs and ribbon. At the bottom of the original post you’ll find a free-to-download set of Widigit symbol and photo instructions for the project.

Twig Christmas Star

These twig stars are slightly more tricky than the reindeer as you have to join the twigs in the right shape, however, there are a set of easy to follow Widgit symbol and photo instructions which show you exactly what to do. You can find them at the bottom of the original post here.

Once again your main resources are the twigs and the glue gun. You can leave the assembled stars plain and rustic or decorate them with small sequins, glitter, ribbon, tinsel…..as you choose or resources allow.

Christmas crafts Twig candle holder

Twig Tealight Candle Holder

This is a project that isn’t just for Christmas 🙂 These twig tealight holders are lovely gifts for the Christmas dinner table. They are also ideal as Mothers’ Day or Grandparents’ Day gifts. One year a group and I made them as a summer craft project and we sold them with little citronella tealights in for outdoor tables.

You can make these really Christmassy just by varying the ribbon – a lovely green, red, gold or silver ribbon would be perfect! As usual with our craft projects there is a set of Widgit symbol and photo instructions included here.

Christmas bauble cookie

Oreo Christmas Cookie Baubles

To say these are Christmas bakes is a misnomer – there is no baking involved – but bakes rhymed with makes for a catchy post title! Just a couple of weeks ago we posted this Widgit symbol and photo recipe for these fun sweet treats that look like a Christmas bauble.

Definitely one for those with a sweet tooth these cookie baubles are fun to make. The original recipe (of which there are many versions on the internet) uses Oreo cookies, but store brand round sandwich cookies will work perfectly well at a more economical price – and who will know what’s under all that extra chocolate (also store’s own brand!). Check out the original post for the recipe and some alternative ideas for decoration.

chocolate bark

Chocolate Bark

Another no-bake chocolate treat – ideal for making as a gift as it looks pretty snapped into pieces and presented in a clear food bag tied with a ribbon. We originally posted this recipe at Easter with suggested toppings of mini-eggs and other Easter treats. However, it’s also great for Christmas too – try topping the chocolate with dried cranberries, nuts, golden toffee popcorn, candied peel or glace cherries! Check out the original post for lots of different topping ideas plus, of course, the Widgit symbol and photo recipe (free to download!).

Enjoy the run up to Christmas and have fun making and baking!
