It’s that time of year again when my students really want to do something Christmassy – and I really want them to do something educational! These Christmas card ideas tick both boxes. The students get to make Christmas cards for their families – and I get them to practise their literacy, numeracy, IT and fine motor skills.

The basis of all three designs is a sheet of paper covered in Christmas greetings. The students make this first (having brainstormed Christmas greetings as a group on the board). It’s just Christmas greetings like ‘Happy Christmas’ or ‘Happy Holidays’ typed out then copy pasted to cover a page. Students choose what (festive) colours to make the text. It can also look effective to vary the font size and type too. Once this is printed out then we can start making the cards!

Beware of the blank border when using the Christmas words page.

Like all the designs this card is very simple to make. One tip is to remember that the printed page of Christmas greetings has a border, so when you’re sticking the Christmas words onto the blank card you will want to position it so that you don’t get a lot of blank page on your card.

Christmas Trees Card

This is my personal favourite. The trees could be decorated all over with glitter (which tends to get the student vote) but I like to keep it simple. Like all of the designs it could be made with Christmas wrapping paper rather than the Christmas greetings paper. Be aware though that wrapping paper can be a bit flimsy and tear easily when cutting or gluing – you’d need a good quality wrapping paper.

Christmas Present Card

Last but not least is this pretty Christmas present card. I’ve made this on a red background, but you could make the background Christmas greeting paper (like the Big Christmas Tree card) and the present of plain card with a ribbon round it.

One last tip…

If you don’t have any ready-made card blanks you could use an A4 sheet of card folded in half and pop it into an A5 envelope.
