Chocolate Bark

In every cookery lesson I have at the moment the students are asking to make something chocolatey as it’s nearly Easter. This Chocolate Bark is a recipe that many of them have made with me before but, funnily enough, they are very happy to make again πŸ˜€. It’s easy and fun to make, and it makes a great handmade Easter gift snapped into pieces, popped in a clear bag and tied with a ribbon.

Although it is heavy on the the chocolate it doesn’t have to be expensive. I make mine with supermarket own brand chocolate which is much cheaper than the branded bars but still tastes great. You can find a free-to-download recipe with Widgit symbols and photos below.

Recipe Hints and Tips

🍫 You can melt the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of water, as suggested in the recipe below, or you can melt it in the microwave. If using a microwave go cautiously, just doing 30 seconds at a time and stir the chocolate in between. It is surprising how well the chocolate squares hold their shape while they are heating and they can look as if they are not melted when they are actually very soft.

chocolate bark topping

🍫 Break up any larger topping pieces with a rolling pin or a knife.

🍫 You can make the recipe with any quantity of chocolate. To get a good pattern effect use half a quantity of white chocolate to milk chocolate.

🍫 You don’t have to use milk and white chocolates – you could use dark chocolate in combination with either of the others if you prefer.

Topping Suggestions

There really are so many things you could use. Here are just a few ideas:

🍫 broken up pretzels

🍫 nuts – mixed or a single type. I never use nuts with students because of the risk of allergies but if I was making this for me I’d love some chopped nuts on it.

🍫 chopped dried fruits – apricots would be delicious, or raisins, or dates.

🍫 popcorn

🍫 mini marshmallows

🍫 broken biscuits or shortbread pieces

🍫 sugar coated chocolate beans like smarties or m&m’s.

🍫 mini eggs – broken up

🍫 sea salt flakes

🍫 And one for Christmas time – dried cranberries, candied peel, glaze cherries and nuts!
