Tips

Making the macaroni cheese has 3 elements: cooking the pasta, cooking the vegetables and making the cheese sauce. However, all 3 elements do not have to be done at the same time – that has the potential to be quite confusing. The process can be completed step by step and then all the elements combined at the end. It doesn’t matter if the macaroni or the vegetables have cooled whilst other bits of the recipe are done because everything will heat through in the oven when the macaroni cheese is baked.

I have suggested using ready-grated cheese for the recipe. Using a grater requires good fine motor skills and needing to grate cheese might make the difference between being able to complete a task independently, and not. Ready-grated cheese takes away a potential barrier and allows for independence. There is, of course, an argument for practising and developing the skill. To build this in the cheese could always be grated ahead of making the recipe, or grating could be introduced once the cook is familiar with the recipe and comfortable with all the other skills involved.

Variations

Once the cook is familiar with the recipe why not try some variations?

😃 You could add some chopped bacon and cook with the onions and mushrooms.

😃 Try adding some chopped leftover ham or gammon when you mix everything together before baking.

😃 Chopped, leftover vegetables could be added when you mix everything together before baking.

😃 Add some colour – mix in cooked broccoli or peas, or stir in fresh spinach leaves which will cook as the dish bakes.
